STILL can't get into a book.... any suggestions???

Okay, my fellow book bloggers and readers, I am still in my reading slump but would love to latch onto something!  I know asking for book suggestions is like asking for a specific grain of sand on a dune, but I'm puttin' it out there anyway.  I am looking for A) some escape reading B) preferably historical fiction set in middle ages- ish, but would also love anything at this point  C) nothing TOO fluffy or brain dead, but almost.  D) something I can get into right away.

So far I have picked up and put down the following (this says NOTHING about the quality of book, for sure, as I know I will LOOOVE them when my brain is not in weird-mode):

  • Hunger Games
  • Graceling
  • East of Eden
  • Wolf Hall
  • The Boleyn Inheritance
  • Friends, Lovers and Chocolate by Alexander McCall Smith
See what I mean?   I need HELP.  Ugh.

Maybe I just need to NOT read for awhile, if that's even possible.  Is that possible?  I don't know.  I know there are other people out there who are feeling the same exact way, someone said it was the January reading slump?  I'll have to pay attention in coming years from now on, I have a feeling they are probably right on with that!

Have a WONDERFUL weekend!  And I look forward to reading all of your bookish suggestions!

Anna Of Byzantium is Historical fiction set in middle ages by Tracy Barrett. Good book and not brain dead at all. Not fluffy either. :)

I know exactly how you feel! I was in a slump until I just finished HOTEL ON THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET and LOVED it! It's historical fiction set in World War II. I'd highly recommend it! I'm glad it's not just me that was in the reading blues!! Good Luck!!

Here's my review of HOTEL, if you are interested!

Hmmm...

Ophelia by Lisa Klein--it's a retelling of Hamlet through Ophelia's eyes, which might sound a little dry, but it's one of the best HF novels I've read! Though it's not complete fluff, there are some "fluff" elements that might be too much for you? I'm not sure.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova--not set in the Middle Ages, but it references Vlad the Impaler and a few other ancient historical characters. Again, GREAT HF novel, and pretty much no fluff at all.

If you're looking for classics, Ivanhoe is a great Middle Ages read as well.

Hope this helped a little. I totally understand how it is to be in a reading slump. Hopefully yours will end soon! :)

Maybe you need something funny. I recommend Gods Behaving Badly, fun, light about the Greek Gods.

I read this during an unsure what mood i'm in can't choose a book period, lol

Here was my review on it.

I sometimes get like that but I don't give up, I just change the genre..I am usually not a fan of 'cozy' mysteries but I did a review on one for Good Reads. The author is Gayle Trent. I read Dead Pan but there is one before that. It was good, maybe a Georgette Heyer novel or find a humor book. Move away from what you typically read... you can always go back.

I can't recall if you've read The Last Queen by C.W. Gortner...that was a great book! I know what you mean by a slump though...every once and awhile it seems that no matter what you read turns to mush wants it hits your brain...at least that's how it works for me. Good luck!

Shweta: thank you for that! Going to google it right now.

Natalie: I love a twist on any traditional tale! Sound great.

MarceJ: going to google that one, and I think you are EXACTLY right. I need a light hearted something. In fact, after I read your comment I went upstairs and dug up One for the Money by Janet Evanovich (I've never read it and have had it for about 10 years, maybe more!) and I think it JUST might be the ticket, so THANK YOU!

CelticLady: when you said go outside my genre, I thought, "But I don't really have a genre, now what?" But I think I kind of do, soooo along with MarceJ's comment above I am now reading One for the Money FINALLY after following your advice!

Hey Jo-Jo! I have seen that book, but forgotten about it! Which is why I love turning to readers and fellow book bloggers for suggestion! Going to google and get ahold of this one as well.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!~

Hmm...those aren't terribly fluffy. If you want some chocolate for the brain, try some of the following: In Her Shoes, A Hunger Like No Other, Dark Rivers of the Heart (a bit dark but good), The Gambler's Heart (about a scarred French gambler and a poor ex-aristocrat), Name Dropping, Lynn Kurland books (historical).

All nicely fluffy except maybe Dark Rivers of the Heart.

I am loving Wolf Hall. I hope you pick it back up later, it is a great read. But not when in a reading rut
